Recognize and Exterminate Bedbugs

If you have detected the presence of bedbugs, you must act quickly to prevent the invasion from spreading. How to Detect the Presence of Bedbugs

  • You wake up with itchy bites that are in a line or in a group
  • You find small black spots on the sheets, the mattress or box spring (feces or blood)
  • You see bedbugs or bedbug shells near the bed

Characteristics of Bedbugs

  • Invisible to the naked eye
  • Size of an apple seed
  • Brown or red (if engorged they will be red)
  • Longevity 5 months to 1 year
  • Come out at night

Characteristics of the Eggs

  • Whitish eggs
  • Size of a pinhead
  • Found in enclosed spaces
  • Hatch 10 to 14 days after laying

Before the Arrival of the Exterminator

  • Prepare your home
  • Prepare your home
  • Remove carpets and curtains
  • Treat fabrics and clothes and then put them in a sealed plastic bag
  • Destroy and wrap any tainted furniture before you dispose of it
  • Vacuum the area and place the vacuum contents (bag or canister) into a separate, sealed plastic bag before throwing it out.

Treatment of Infested Textiles

  • Put fabric items in the dryer at the highest setting for at least 30 minutes OR
  • Put the items through a complete cycle the washer with hot water (60°C (140°F)) OR
  • Treat fabric with a steam cleaner (100°C (212°F)) OR
  • Place fabric in the freezer for 24 hours (-17°C (-1.4°F))

After the Exterminator Leaves

  • Respect the times recommended by your exterminator before re-entering your home
  • Air out rooms
  • Avoid walking barefoot for at least 48 hrs. after treatment
  • Check infested rooms frequently
  • Apply the recommendations made by the technician
